Japanese Box is a hardy evergreen shrub with green oval leaves. New growth of a buxus microphylla var. japonica (botanical name) is a vibrant lighter green, while older growth tends to be rich darker green. Perfect for hot, warm climates, it handles heat better than many, many other plants in its bracket. Grown in full sun or partial shade, once established Buxus Japonica doesn’t require a lot of water.
People often use Japanese Box for making neat, manicured, evergreen hedges for year round impact. With dense, rich, green leaves it is perfect for clipping to a desired shape. Japanese Box will grow in part shade, but it will take longer to reach maturity. Usually, buxus if left untended can reach up to 1 meter in height. If you want a thick hedge, plant them approx 25cm apart – around 4 plants per meter.
